News Flash - Cancer and Fertility in the New York Times Today

The New York Times published "Family Planning When Cancer Intrudes" today. I am thrilled that they are supporting Fertile Hope's mission by raising awareness about cancer and fertility, but also frustrated by a number of inaccuracies and misleading statements in the article. Bittersweet...

What do you think of the article?

  1. I just wanted to say I was excited to find your blog and organization. I'm an ovarian cancer survivor of two years. I was diagnosed with stage 1C during an eighteen week ultrasound when I was pregnant with my seond child. I was encouraged, despite a second healthy ovary, to have both removed. Because I wanted to have more children I refused further surgery. My cancer didn't spread and I've been monitored via blood work and ultrasounds since my original diagnosis. I just gave birth to my third child on 5/6/09. I am so happy that I didn't get sterilized. As for my future, I would still like to have more children. I've had no recurrences but I know the pressure will be on to complete my "treatment." Anyway, I just wanted to share my story a bit.

  2. Have you heard of embryo adoption? Another way people can get pregnant and go through the process.

    I've found a great website: www.embryoadoption.org

  3. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 34, four and half years ago. I was devastated at the prospect of losing my fertility and was not offered any options for fetility preservation. I fought hard to get the correct information and am happy to say I found it all at fertilehope.org. I live in Ireland so a lot of the options are not available here and that added to my distress. Nevertheless I was helped so much with your online resources and when I finished my treatment, I was determined to make the information available to young Irish women in a similar situation. I published an information booklet in collaboration with a team of fertility and oncology experts and it is now widely available to all young women with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Fertile Hope was my inspiration and your influence has stretched all the way across to the shores of Ireland. My final comment is that despite all my body and spirit has been through and the toll that chemotherapy took on my body, I have just found out that I am 6 weeks pregnant with my first child. Please take hope from my story, as I was never given hope by anyone that this day would come for me.

  4. I am 29 years old and have been diagnosed with breast cancer, ease of treatment and a similar story, except for my first acceptance as a rejection of herbal medicine. I was not part of the Perseid movement and did not really build relationships with any of them, I just believed in their operation. I say this because it was during the use of Dr. Itua herbal medicine that I now attest that herbal medicine is real, the phytotherapy Dr. Itua heal my breast cancer which I suffered for 2 years. Dr. Itua herbal medicine is made of natural herbs, with no side effects, and easy to drink.
