News Flash - Can You Imagine Having Octuplets?

Did you see the news about octuplets born to a woman in California? These stories usually infuriate me. They make the reproductive world look reckless and ruin it for those of us who play by the rules. I was thrilled to see the following reported by CNN:

"The media should not make this into heroic case. This is anything but a heroic case. This is very bad medicine."

What is your take on stories like this?

  1. What bums me out is that the media is so focused on the fertility treatment, not the risks of having 8 babies at once. Although, I am thankful for the story because it is clearing up some misconceptions about IVF. In addition, it's bringing to light that the patient has a right to take whatever risks they want because they are the ones paying for the treatment - wouldn't be an issue if it was covered under insurance!

  4. A friend and I were wondering if high number multiples - like 8 - ever happen from a drug like Clomid or could only be from IVF.

  5. Since this woman's doctor participates in the Sharing Hope program, has Fertile Hope considered implementing more restrictive guidelines on who it works with?

  6. i think the comment above is unfair to fertile hope and wanted to chime in as a sleeper on this blog. asrm, sart, the government, insurance companies, and/or the medical board that certified him should be the ones with the more restrictive guidelines, before fertile hope. how is a small nonprofit expected to do what all of those large governing bodies are not?! what do you suggest fertile hope guidelines should be ?! can they really be expected to know, prove and enforce how many embryos doctors around the country are implanting into women?!
